CMS is the analysis method for small, volatile molecules. It is also used for the study of liquid, gaseous and solid samples. In gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), sample is volatized to gas phase and separates its various components using a capillary or packed column. The compounds are propelled by an inert carrier gas such as argon, helium or nitrogen. This leads to separate all components for each other and , separated components elute from the column at different times, which is generally referred to as their retention times. After separation components leave the GC column, they are ionized by the mass spectrometer. Ionized molecules are then accelerated through the instrument’s mass analyser.
